Would the "Palanga Orchestra" have been founded if Counts Tiškevičiai had not founded the resort? How important is Birutė Park for music, and how important is the cultural activity taking place there for the park? To what extent did the attitude of the city government influence the preservation of the tradition of orchestral music concerts at all times? And what role does the audience play in this tradition? What do the veterans of the "Palanga Orchestra" who have been playing music here for more than 20 summers feel about the rotunda? And what muses does Palanga inspire today's composers?
in 2023 As the resort celebrates its 770th birthday, the "Palanga Orchestra" invites you to take a new look at the second-century tradition of orchestral music concerts in Palanga's parks, claiming the status of intangible cultural heritage.
Celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, the "Palanga Orchestra" is a direct continuation of the oldest urban cultural tradition in Palanga - according to historical sources, at the initiative of Count Juozap Tiškevičius, orchestras have been playing music for vacationers for free in the resort since 1901. At that time, the orchestra's concerts were held in the park near the Kurhaus in a specially built rotunda. Palanga became unimaginable without these afternoon musical performances. The count did not have his own orchestra, he limited himself to guest orchestras from abroad. Later, after the restoration of Lithuanian Independence, orchestras led by conductors B. Jonuš and V. Visockis, well-known throughout the country and beyond, began to perform in Palanga every summer. in 1927 a new rotunda was built in Birutė Park, since then wind music concerts have moved to this space.
