On dark winter evenings, when most Christians celebrate the feast of St. Hanukkah, or the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by Jews during the darker winter months of the year, when Christians celebrate Christmas, while Jews celebrate Hanukkah, or the Festival of Lights. The date of Hanukkah varies according to the lunar calendar, but it is always celebrated between the end of November and the end of December.Hanukkah is not "Jewish Christmas", as people sometimes say. And although the origins of this celebration, which lasts eight days, are quite different from Christmas, it is still a celebration of new beginnings, the return of light and hope.
For eight days, a special candelabrum - the Hanukkah candleholder - is lit in Jewish windows and in the streets, where more candles are lit every day; large potato pancakes, latkes, are steaming on the tables; and sufganiyot - doughnuts - are waiting for dessert, without which this holiday is unthinkable! It's just as much fun for the kids: their savings are replenished by their relatives, and there are fun songs and the spinning of the dreidel!
On this tour we will tell you the story of Chanukah, why it's celebrated for 8 days, who was the hero Judas Maccabeus, after whom Jewish sports clubs all over the world are named today, and some other important festivals on the Jewish calendar. After a stroll around the city, you will enjoy a tasting of the rich and hearty dinner specialities of the "Beigel's Shop" Hanukkah: forshmak, baba ganush, hummus for starters, hot latkes for the main course, and doughnuts for dessert with a cup of tea or coffee, and gingerlach, a delicacy made of carrots, ginger and nuts.
