The four thematic blocks "Landscape of Symbols", "The Attentive Gaze: a Window to Nature", "Longing for Landscape", "Urban Landscape: from Topography to Vision" reveal different representations of landscape in the engravings of the old masters. The exhibition explores different types of landscape and nature images, ranging from a small charming image in the background of a composition to a huge panorama, from a fleeting snapshot of a particular plant's life to a grand vision of eternity. The alternating micro- and macro-view gives the chosen theme new problematic aspects. The exhibition includes single prints and illustrations, prints from albums and folders, thematic series, botanical atlases and drawing training manuals. The exhibition presents a wide range of works by Western European artists: the famous Dutch, German, Italian and French engravers were popular and sought-after, and were a source of pride for library collections and the collections of printmaking rooms.
