Berlin is a bubbling cauldron of different cultures, where the wildest ideas are born. In this city, September 20 turned from words to flesh. Trio "Flamingo" coming to Vilnius. Washington-born clarinetist Chris Heenan and two colorful Danish musicians - percussionist Christian Windfeld and double bassist Adam Pultz Melbye - crossed paths precisely in Berlin. In a city where impossible things become possible.
When musicians of such skill, courage and even audacity gather together, you can expect only one thing - a sound bomb that will explode any preconceived notions. Chris, Christian and Adam don't stick to strict rhythms, easily decoded harmonies or conventional compositional structures. It is not for them. Rather like sonic speleologists, the trio slowly descends into previously unexplored caves of textures and dynamics during each performance. Sometimes with their subtlety, they come close to such a limit, when their instruments speak at frequencies that are almost inaudible, only felt by the efforts of the soul, and sometimes, on the contrary, they overwhelm the listener with a strong, breath-taking and eardrum-pressing wave of sounds.
At first glance, the music created by Flamingo may seem awkward, heavy and only a few will bite, but this is not the case. This is extremely atmospheric and textural music, in which not only improvisational music snobs can swim, but also drone, ambient or even metal and rock music lovers.
Mikas Kurtinaitis
September 20 the concert will be special not only because of the guests from abroad. Tubaist and percussionist Mikas Kurtinaitis will host a unique performance at "Improdimensija".
Recently, this musician has blossomed in the context of contemporary and improvisational music, but his musical horizons are far from limited to these two directions. He also plays in the klezmer/Balkan music collective "Rakija Klezmer Orkestar", pays a lot of attention to getting to know the music heritage of Eastern Europe, Middle East.
After completing the studies of contemporary music and free improvisation at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater, M. Kurtinaitis began to be interested in the possibilities of expanding the sound of the tuba. This creator gained special attention after performing the program "Solo for four tubas". During it, the tubas arranged around the listeners created a spatial, spherical sound experience.
In "Improdimensije", M. Kurtinaitis will present a somewhat modified program, in which fragments of "Solo for four tubas" will combine with new experiments and the sounds of a prepared tuba. This will be a great proof that the talk about the renaissance of the tuba on the Lithuanian scene is not out of the question!
