Belts have always been used for practical purposes, such as sewing clothes together, decorating accessories and tying utensils. But they also have deeper meanings - the patterns in the bands have accompanied people from birth to death, from the wrapping of a baby to the lowering of a coffin. The patterns of the bands are believed to contain encoded symbols of fertility, protection, good luck and other symbols, and the symbolic act of banding was believed to protect a person and their household.
We will be running a series of two workshops to give you the basics of weaving the selected bands. In the first session you will learn about the bands themselves, their types, their distribution, etc., as well as make a throw for weaving the bands. In the second session, you will start weaving the bands, collecting patterns. The process of weaving the ribbon is painstaking and long, but even before you finish it, you will be able to take the ribbon home - you will already have the skills to weave and finish the ribbon.
This session will be led by Titas Mockevičius - an ethnic culture enthusiast, craftsman, singer and dancer. Titas, who has been involved in folklore since he was a little boy, has been interested in crafts for many years: he carves, grows his own flax, prepares and spins it, and dyes yarn with plants. As he says, he uses the bands to reconnect with the prosenium, and he tries to put all his good thoughts and wishes in a hundred-pointed band. For him, the bands are both improvisation and a good exercise for the brain.
The first session will take place on 12 February.
The second session will take place on 19 February.
