The Sea in the Forest is a musical labyrinth in which two wanderers - Liudas Mockūnas (saxophone) and Petras Geniušas (piano) - meet at the same exits to the spaces of M. K. Čiurlionis' music.
The two-musician project "The Sea in the Forest" was born in 2011 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the death of the most famous Lithuanian composer and painter, Mikolaj Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875-1911). At that time, many attempts were made to use Čiurlionis's music for new works, cross-genre and cross-disciplinary interpretations. Of all these attempts, the duo of Geniuš and Mockūnas stands out as a result of extraordinary musical sensitivity and original interpretative vision, taking the music of Čiurlionis and other Lithuanian composers to a new artistic level, and impressing with unexpected recontextualizations of quotations from their works. For musicians of different generations and genres, Čiurlionis' work has become a source of inspiration and an incentive to dive into the "sea" of individual experiences and subjective stylistic interpretations. "What unites us is the Vilnius School, which is hard to fit into any format and is characterised by a combination of anarchy and discipline. We also have one teacher in common - Vladimir Chekasin," says Geniušas, who became Mockūnas' creative partner for the first time.
The duo's music cannot be pigeonholed into one particular style - in their conversation you can hear snatches of Romantic, Impressionist, contemporary music, jazz and free improvisation, commentaries and entire solo openings, all firmly bound together in a seamless flow of sonic events. It is like a labyrinth of echoes of the 19th century, 20th century (fragments of the works of Čiurlionis, Felix Bajor, Julius Andreev) and 21st century (improvisations by Mockūnas and Geniuš) music: the two performers search for their own path and discover new and unexpected turns, behind each of them discovering each other. In other words, this is not a music of searching, but of discovery.
The festival is organised by Klasika LT.
