Camaradzi
Created by Liam Gillick, Anton Vidokle \ 2024 \ USA, Lithuania \ English subt. \ 24 min.
"Camaradzi, filmed this spring in New York, connects to the first film with a glimpse into the history of the East-Central European region and with the TV tower restaurant of our capital city, which revolves around its axis. The film takes as its axis the transcript of a secret emergency meeting of the Romanian Communist Party on 1 August 1989, which the artists found, translated into English, in the archives of the Woodrow Wilson Institute in the USA. In the meeting, the then Romanian leader Nicolae Ceaușescu and top party officials discuss the consequences of the Solidarity movement in Poland and the "dangers" it may pose to other communist governments in Eastern Europe, as well as potential strategies for further action. Interestingly, the meaning of the words they use is almost the opposite of the meaning of the same words in the democratic world, which the actors try to decode in the first part of the film. Nicolae Ceaușescu is played by Jim Fletcher, known for his work with the Wooster Group, an experimental theatre company in New York that performs original plays and new productions of Bertolt Brecht.

The first Vilnius Performance Art Biennial 2023 presented the performance by artists Liam Gillick and Anton Vidokle, "Kelrodė svět. Part 2", which took place on the territory of the Grįžračis field of the Lithuanian Railway Train Repair Depot. It proposed a rethinking of the role of music and artists in the independence movements and revolutions since the 1970s. The artists were inspired by revolutionary songs from different countries and by the Vilnius Television Tower, due to its exceptional significance in the country's history and its dominant vertical position in the capital's urban landscape. The performance, and also the filming site, where the outdoor area of the Vilnius train repair depot Grįžračis became a double of the TV tower's revolving restaurant. Using the footage from the performance, the artists are currently finishing the short film Antrakt. The title refers to the French term entr’acte - a gap, pause or musical interlude between two actions. The film is like a radio picking up snippets of songs from the past and events that shaped world history.
The screening will be followed by a remote discussion with the artists, moderated by Neringa Bumblienė, Artistic Director and Curator of the Vilnius Biennial.
The evening will be closed with a musical performance "Song Collection" by artist Lina Lapelytė.
Free tickets will be distributed on the day of the screening at the Skalvija box office.
