The action of the play is the Second World War, the French resistance movement. After a failed operation, the group of partisans caught and locked in the attic faces physical and psychological torture. It is this borderline state that crystallizes essential fears and clearly reveals their self-defense methods.
Recognizing the relevance of this work is not difficult: we are constantly anxious to make sense of our existence. Since we cannot overcome death directly, we try to overcome it symbolically: we stick a flag in the moon, we build sculptures of famous poets, we learn countless important names... Memory is a man-made immortality, but it requires uniqueness, and this requires sacrifice. Such a chain of meaning is the perfect soil for human excellence - the tragedy of the characters of this play. Tragedies in which a mortal becomes dehumanized out of a great desire to be human.
