"Repetition. Histoire(s) du théâtre (I)" is the play-calling card of the Swiss director Milo Rau, who has been setting the tone for many European theater stages for almost a decade. Milo Rau constantly undertakes new highly ambitious performances, ideas, projects in order to understand how art can become a tool of resistance. When he goes with his team to create performances where wars and other greatest tragedies of modern man are taking place, he includes local residents in the performances, giving them a voice. In recent years, his premieres were held in Iraq and Syria, and the most recent - "Antigone in the Amazon" - in Brazil. Milo Rau talks about the post-colonial world and power structures, he is interested not only in documentary, but also in what lies beyond it.
"Repetition. Histoire(s) du théâtre (I)' - the anatomy of a single crime. On a night in April 2012, 32-year-old Ihsane Jarfi left a bar in Liège and, after exchanging a few words with a group of young men, got into their gray Volkswagen Polo and drove off. Two weeks later, he was found brutally murdered at the edge of the forest.
Milo Rau in the play "Repetition. Histoire(s) du théâtre (I)' recreates the case of the murder of Ihsane Jarfi with a team of professional and non-professional actors. In the scene, the crime is analyzed and reconstructed based on a multi-perspective narrative form, and the viewer is introduced to the five steps of the criminal case, during which questions are raised: what is the origin of the crime? Prejudice or unexpected decision? How much of the crimes committed are the community's fault? What role does the audience play in this discussion?
With this performance, the director returns to the fundamental creative problems of the past 15 years: how to represent violence and traumatic events on stage?
