Sashiko was born out of a spirit of textile appreciation.
Simple, functional and beautiful, this Japanese technique has been used since the Middle Ages to decorate, reinforce, mend or creatively reuse worn-out garments and scraps.
We invite you to a sashiko embroidery workshop, where you will learn about this ingenious knitting technique, its history and its uses, and learn a couple of ornaments that you can easily apply to your everyday life.
The workshop will be led by Rūta Žinienė. She has been embroidering with this technique for seven years. She uses it in her everyday life, whether she is weaving clothes or improvising personal textile creations. According to her, sashiko is more than knitting, it is a very meditative and at the same time everyday, practical, even activist activity. It is also a great exercise for the brain, as sashiko is very different from ordinary embroidery.
In Japan, it is said that sashiko cannot be fully described in words - like meditation. Sashiko needs to be practiced and experienced.
All necessary tools for the workshop will be provided.
We recommend participants aged 13 years and older.

The workshop will take place at the Asian Arts Centre, Užupis, Krivių str. 12 (UMI).
