HOWARD HANSON – Concerto for organ, harp and strings
JEAN FRANÇAIX – L’horloge de flore (The Flower Clock) for oboe and orchestra
SAMUEL BARBER – Adagio for strings, Op. 11
MARCEL DUPRÉ – Symphony in G minor, Op. 25, for organ and orchestra
The Philharmonic organ has been played for 60 years! In this concert, it will be engaged in wonderful works in which the king of the instruments will be reigned by Virginijus Barkauskas, a concert organist and pedagogue living in the United States. Since 2010, Barkauskas has been returning to Lithuania regularly for concerts. He has enjoyed a creative partnership with the oboist Robertas Beinaris with whom among other Lithuanian performers Barkauskas collaborated at the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Concert Hall, Vilnius Cathedral, the Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Kaunas, Riga Cathedral and elsewhere. Musica Humana Juventus orchestra (formed by Beinaris), the Vilnius University Chamber Orchestra and talented young soloists have put together a colourful and intriguing programme, in which L’horloge de flore (The Flower Clock) will spread the scents of multicoloured blossoms, Adagio of exquisite beauty will immerse the audience in contemplation, and the dialogues between the orchestra and the organ will narrate stormy tales. By the way, the programme of the concert also has a meaningful connection: Jonas Žukas, one of the most famous Lithuanian organists of the US diaspora of the interwar period, studied with the renowned French composer and organist Marcel Dupré (whose Symphony will be performed tonight), and now Žukas’ creative path is being continued by another representative of the US diaspora – the soloist of the concert, V. Barkauskas.
