The horror of the Holocaust claimed 6 million lives worldwide. This horrifying figure is not just a statistic from the Second World War, but six million human stories that were brutally cut short, often just as they were beginning to unfold. Fortunately, there was light in this darkness - brave people who risked their own safety, family and home to help Jews persecuted by the Nazis. More than 900 people in Lithuania have received the World Medal of Righteousness, one of the highest numbers of rescuers in Europe in terms of population. Teachers, artists, military officers, librarians, doctors, priests, nuns or peasants - often humble people who fought for justice, not for honour or profit, but for the sake of justice - dared to stand up to the brown plague that was ravaging Europe. Let us hear these stories of saviours and those they saved, and let us imprint them on our hearts, so that when we need courage or a miracle of hope, we may have someone to turn to.
