For the third time, the world's largest gypsy symphony orchestra, known as the Hundred Gypsy Violins, will perform for the Lithuanian public. This unusual concert will feature classical masterpieces as well as traditional Gypsy and Jewish melodies, played in the orchestra's original and inimitable style.
The Budapest Gypsy Symphony Orchestra is a unique phenomenon in the world of music. The orchestra performs traditional Hungarian and Gypsy melodies, as well as classics by Brahms, Johann Strauss' Father & Son, Monti, Bizet and Sarasate, in their original arrangements, without a score and without the need for a conductor - one of the performers plays the role of the latter. The musicians listen to each other, play with the same body, unerringly follow the rhythm or the changes of style.
In addition to violins, the orchestra includes violas, cellos, double basses and clarinets. The cherry on the cake of the orchestral sound is the virtuoso cymbal player.
The history of the orchestra is also unusual. In 1985, Sándor Járóka, Hungary's most famous Primus (first violin and leader) died. The best gypsy musicians from all over the country attended his funeral. To pay their respects to Sándor, they started playing, and, amazingly! - an orchestra was born - an orchestra that delighted the whole of Europe, and later made the world applaud
