Long live the imagination!

One day, an elderly man from La Mancha decides to go out into the world as a wandering knight. Inspired by chivalric novels, he calls himself Don Quixote and gives himself the role of a fighter against evil, while striving for a new "Golden Age". Together with his armour-bearer Sancho Panza, he seeks adventure, but instead of heroic deeds, he suffers shameful defeats. Nevertheless, in their imagination, they are invincible in their battles against sorcerers, demons and beasts. Through Don Quixote's eyes, we question the world around us and ask ourselves: 

Is this world really what it is?

Is it really the only possible world?

Could the world be any different?

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, a mad adventurer, began writing the first part of this work while still in prison in 1605. "Don Quixote is a masterpiece of Spanish literature, a tribute to the spirit of adventure and a vision of the world of all dreamers. 

The young German director Nikolas Darnstädt creates stunning visual worlds in this production that captivate with their exaggerated aesthetic. The stage adaptation of the work contrasts the power of ideas, creativity and fantasy with reality and its social norms. For the director, Don Quixote is a creator, an artist. And every true artist is a knight of the "Sad Image" because he experiences loneliness. He sees the world as others cannot see it, and perhaps never will. And there is nothing left for him to do but ask: is the world that everyone else calls "reality" really real? Nobody understands him and he understands nothing. That is why he is terribly lonely. It is a sad sight.
