Director Jafar Panahi plays himself. Forbidden to leave Iran, he stays in a border village and feels closer to the film crew in Turkey. Two love stories unfold in parallel on both sides of the border. For the lovers, the borders become a tragic trap as they seek to escape prejudice, tradition and oppression. And at the centre of their hardships, the director, with the same desire for freedom in his heart and camera in his hands, is a shocked witness. "This is Jafar Panahi's fifth film since he was banned by the Iranian government. His ingenious inventiveness in telling stories under tightly constrained conditions never ceases to amaze. This film is a methakine of the highest order, and there is no end to what can be said about it. However, for the moment, I would single out one thing: Panahi's ability and courage to openly question even himself - his methods and his goals - is what separates the people who are free inside from those who lock them up."
