Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (Witkacy) is a classic of 20th-century Polish drama. His 1921 work "In a Small Manor" appears as an ironic commentary on the idyllic rural tradition, symbolized by the "small, quiet manor surrounded by trees" - a motif that has existed in Polish literature since its very beginnings. Life here is lived without any real curiosity about life and without any deeper interest in anything. Its essence is a slow, lazy and dispassionate contemplation of everyday events, the rhythm of which is dictated by the established meal hours. Even the most unusual and drastic facts are accepted without much surprise, and sometimes even with barely concealed indifference. Even the appearance of the spirit of the deceased housewife does not cause any unexpected surprise - she returns from the afterlife as if from an ordinary journey to complete her affairs on earth. It is an unrealistic situation, but Witkacy tells it in a completely realistic way, using elements of pastiche. The surreal story becomes a story about human normality in an abnormal world...
