A wasted Jakimkus returns to his homestead from imprisonment. The farmhouse is empty, the dog is lapping the owner, the son Vilius shows up late at night and tells him that his mother died waiting for her husband, who was sentenced to prison for a tragic drunken car accident. Vilius had been drafted into the army because he had to nurse his mother back to health, and now he digs ditches for land reclamation, persuading his boss to take his father on. Their task is to bring up a little daughter in a remote village where the owner, a young widow named Milda, is raising her little daughter. The Yakimkai stay with her, play with Laimute, somehow warming up inside themselves in the company. The father doesn't drink anymore, only once, when Vilis and a lady go to a village festival, he buys a bottle of wine and awkwardly tries to woo Milda. She looks on pityingly, but lets Vilas, who has returned at night, into her room. The work on the farmhouse is over, Vilius has been drafted into the army, the people have dispersed, and when the snow has stopped, all that is left of Milda's demolished house is a lonely chimney.
