Shalom, Butrimanc! is the second march where we will combine marching with Jewish stories. This time we will visit Butrimoni, a town that has preserved a triangular market square surrounded by former Jewish houses.
Do you remember the song about the potatoes and "Hava Nagila" to warm you up? Say it again, on 27 April we'll sing and dance again!
Before the Second World War, there were over 200 shtetls in the territory of present-day Lithuania, where large Jewish communities lived together with others. At the beginning of the 20th century, about 80% of Butrimoni's population was Jewish, and in 1931 they owned 24 of the town's 25 businesses.Only 15 Jews survived the Holocaust, and at least a couple of them are known to all of Lithuania today.
After a couple of hours in Butrimoni, we'll head south on a 23 km hike to the Tatar Raižiai, but if you're only interested in a tour of the Butrimoni shtetl, you're welcome to join us.
