Since the foundation of Vilnius, people here have spoken different languages, gone to different houses of worship, and followed different customs, but they usually (or eventually) found a common language. The city also had separate neighbourhoods of Jews, Lutherans and Orthodox Christians called Ruthenians. "Civitas Ruthenica, or Ruthenian City, occupied a large part of the Old Town, building one church after another, four of which still remain in the Old Town today. On this excursion, we will learn how to read the icons, where and for what the candles are lit in the churches, smell the enchanting scent of incense in the churches, and discover how many Lithuanians are Orthodox saints. Together, we will search for the obvious but often overlooked curiosities of Vilnius related to the Orthodox people who lived in the city, and we will visit the unique Orthodox sites that have only just opened up to us.
