Newcomers - that's what we're calling this area now. In the past, different places in this suburb had their own names - New World, Chimneys, Scapulars. Two important roads once passed through the area, commemorated by two surviving chapels. The suburb dates back to the advent of the railway, as an industrial area and a working-class neighbourhood. During the Soviet era, the district retained its working-class appearance, was built in a chaotic way, with houses being built here and there as the need arose, wherever there was space and the terrain allowed - and in Naujininkai it is impressive, with many slopes, hills and stairs.
This unplanned development in the area has led to a cosy coexistence of large blocks of flats and dormitories with oases of small trees, asphalted roads with country lanes without pavements. The district has long been considered a non-prestigious suburb, with a cemetery, later a prison, a special children's home, a halfway house, a migrant centre, a railway station and an airport nearby. But now it is changing its face: the city is expanding southwards, and it is only a matter of time before we see new blocks of flats replacing the small wooden houses with their walkthrough courtyards, outdoor toilets, water columns, dog kennels and gardens.
Children under 10 years of age (travelling with an adult) do not need a ticket, but please assess your children's ability to participate in the tour.
