Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso and Max Ernst are some of the most famous artists who shaped the development of 20th century art. Most viewers are familiar with their paintings and graphic works, and to a lesser extent with the ceramics that occasionally enrich their exhibitions, but tapestries woven from the artists' works are hardly seen.
For the first time not only in Lithuania, but also in neighbouring countries, the Museum of Applied Arts and Design is presenting 23 ceramics by Chagall and Picasso - panels, plates, vases, jugs, and 12 tapestries woven by the artist Yvette Cauquil-Prince based on the sketches by Chagall, Picasso and Ernst. The works naturally fall into six themes: the Bible, war and peace, the shtetl, love, the circus and the corrida. The artists speak of fundamental ethical and moral values, strive for harmony with nature, and take a nostalgic look at childhood.
The artworks on display are part of the collections of Ida Chagall and Michel Brodskyʼs, and the collections of Yvette Cauquil-Prince.
We are grateful to Mrs. Meret Meyer, Mrs. Bella Meyer and Mr. Darius Hecqui-Cauquil for the loan of ceramics and tapestries.
The exhibition opens on 25 April 2024, Thursday, 5.00 p.m. The opening will be attended by Marc Chagall's granddaughters, Meret Meyer and Bella Meyer, and the son of weaving master Yvette Cauquil-Prince, Darius Hecqas-Cauquil.
