Oak has long been considered the king of forests in Lithuania (and many other countries). Found in the northern hemisphere of the Earth, oak trees symbolise strength, power and longevity. For example, our Stelmužės oak may be half a thousand years old - it is one of the oldest oaks in Europe.
The main character in the documentary "Heart of an Oak" is much younger: he is "only" 210 years old. But it is old enough to be home, or at least a temporary refuge, for many forest inhabitants, from squirrels to mice, from wild boars to eagles, from ants to snakes. The ecosystem around an oak tree is one of the largest and most complex social structures in the world. The joys and sorrows of neighbourhoods, coexistence and compromise, solidarity, survival and refuge - all this and much more in a beautifully filmed ode to nature and the life that thrives within it.
