Old Kaunas is unimaginable without its Jewish inhabitants. And although attempts have been made to expel the Jewish community from the city, from the 18th century onwards, the Yiddish language began to sound louder and louder in the streets of Kaunas, synagogues, Jewish schools, hospitals and shelters were built, Jewish-owned Jewish-owned shops were opened, and businesses grew - beauty products, confectionery, tailoring, scones, beverages and construction industries, even banks! Jewish orchestras played in Kaunas restaurants where the small stage and bandstand thrived between the wars, actors performed, writers wrote poems and the still-loved songs of Daniel Dolsky thrilled the heart. Unfortunately, when the war broke out, people's dreams and lives were shattered to pieces, and the colours and sounds of Jewish Kaunas quickly faded into the past. I invite you to take a zigzag journey through the streets of the old city, remembering the Jewish inhabitants who worked, fought, waited, dreamed, rejoiced and grieved in the city.
I recommend that those who come on this excursion should also visit the Vilnius excursion, "In Search of Northern Jerusalem".
