"In 1934, the first Sea Festival took place, bringing more than 60,000 people from all over Lithuania to Klaipėda - the second largest number of people living in the city. Most of those who came had never seen the sea before, and were eager to travel by special trains, even though the journey took between nine and eleven hours", historical sources attest to the 90-year old event.
Not many photographs of that time have survived, but Audronius Žemgulis, KCCC resident, proposes to experience a time machine of sorts: to use bellows cameras of the period to capture the anniversary of one of the country's oldest festivals, with the events spreading across the city, and to highlight the photographic strips in the same style.
What kind of Klaipėda will it look like through the historical lens of a photo? Maritime culture, the traditions of the Pomeranian people, old wooden ships - perhaps, on that one day, the silhouettes of that lost time of Lithuanian-German coexistence, which counted seven centuries before the Second World War, will emerge in unexpected shadows.
