1715. In just a few years, the Zimmermann Coffee House in Leipzig became the city's most fashionable gathering place, with weekly free concerts by the Collegium Musicum Leipzig under the direction of G. Ph. The Zimmermann Coffee House has been the venue for the premieres of many of Bach's secular works, including the cantata Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht, BWV 211, otherwise known as the Coffee Cantata. The closing concert of the festival focuses on the latter work, which not only wittily comments on the new gastronomic winds of the time, which were met with suspicion by the Germans, but also transports the audience to the famous coffee house, a hotbed of cultural exchange, communion and fraternity. The long-standing collaboration between the artistic director of the concert programme, harpsichordist Alina Rotaru, and the festival has already brought many spectacular musical projects to the public. This year, Leipzig from the early 18th century will be brought to life by German, British, Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian artists.
