Fourteenth century. In northern Italy, and later in Florence, a new movement in music composition and music theory emerged: the termento. The concert programme Amor mi fa cantar (English: "Love makes me sing") reveals not only the colourful secular music of this period, but also the theme of love, which has been a topic of relevance for composers throughout the ages. The vocal compositions from the Rossi Codex (first half of the 14th century), as well as polyphonic works by Johannes Ciconia (1370/1375-1412), a flanders composer active in Italy, are presented in contrast to the monophonic instrumental form of the Istanpitte (London Codex, c. 1400). The ensemble quidni (lit. "why not?") faithfully follows its chosen name and interprets the works freely and inquisitively in the programmes it performs, while demonstrating an impeccable knowledge of historically informed performance. Their repertoire is extremely wide-ranging, from medieval minstrel songs to Baroque chamber music.
