Agnius Jankevičius' black satire musical performance "Reforma" based on the director's play of the same name, focuses on the processes that are taking place in Europe, of which Lithuania is an integral part. Migration as a phenomenon is a problem, but an even more pressing and growing problem is the global syndrome of irrelevance. Irrelevance, both in a social and existential sense, is destructive and cannot offer solutions to change the situation. Unnecessary breeds even greater destruction, absurdity and even violence.
The time of the emptying of homesteads is coming to the Lithuanian province, and this is no metaphor. This has not bypassed the town of Skakiškis. Once famous for the bright graduates of its high school and for its cheese and butter factory, the town is now vegetating, but the people of Skakiškis have not lost hope. There are still creative, innovative and visionary people left in their ranks who will not let the town become a ghost town. Who are these people? They are three female teachers from the Skakiškis school who devise a plan to turn the town into a new Promised Land.
The play "Reforma" is a sharp, satirical play about the ambiguous problem of refugees and the unnecessary people who are among us. All the main characters are essentially written off. Bad actions beget bad actions. Inappropriate actions produce inappropriate actions, and the paradox is that everything is done to survive.
Problematically, the issue touches on the global changes that are taking place in Europe, as well as on the aspects of human value, dignity, altruism and pragmatism. Incidentally, the aesthetics of the animated film South Park and Roy Andersson's The Trilogy of Life are also close to those of the performance.
