The Ruler is a poetic drama that takes the audience back to ancient times, when a ruler, thirsty for power, who has conquered foreign lands and lost his only son, is going through an internal drama, with no one to leave behind the captured riches and power. V. Mykolaitis-Putinas was the first in Lithuanian literature to convey history through national consciousness. In the drama "The Ruler", one can recognise oneself as a nation, and, apart from the tragedy of the personality, one can also see Lithuania's becoming, the struggle for freedom and the ideas of revival. "The Ruler is a legend about humanity, the concept of honour and freedom, and at the same time, it is also the journey of individual characters towards their own truth. For some, it is unconditional loyalty to their tribe and clan, for others, it is love and passion, and for others, it is revenge after deception and humiliation.
