A love triangle story as old as the world, set in the early 19th century: the opera prima donna Tosca suspects her lover, the painter Caravagossi, of having an affair with a beauty posing for him. Although the painter professes to love only her, the singer does not feel safe because her jealousy and suspicions are constantly encouraged by the sadistic Scarpia, the head of the secret police, who has fallen in love with Tosca himself. By devising his cruel plan and manipulating the feelings of the young people, Scarpia brings all the main characters closer to an inevitable, tragic finale with every step he takes.
After breathtaking performances by J. Verdi's La Forza del Destino and Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier, which The New York Times called "almost supernatural", Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen is making her Metropolitan debut in a leading role. Another soloist will also make his debut in the David McVicar-directed version of the opera: the British-Italian tenor Freddie De Tommaso, who will play Caravaggio. The role of Scarpia, who completes the tragic love triangle, will be played by American baritone Quinn Kelsey.
