The legendary ballet The Nutcracker is undoubtedly a world classic and a favourite with audiences, and is the most popular work of the festive season. Many of the world's most prestigious theatres include it in their repertoire. The two-part ballet is based on the fairy tale The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E. T. A. Hoffmann. The magical music for the ballet was composed in the 19th century by composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The ballet was choreographed by Marius Petipa, a French dancer, ballet master and teacher. His most important ballets include: "Don Quixote, La Bayadere, Raymonda, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake.
The Nutcracker was premiered in 1892 by the Italian composer Riccardo Eugenio Drigo, and the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy was performed by the Italian prima ballerina Antonietta Dell'Era. The anticipated hour of The Nutcracker's fame came much later in the United States, when choreographer George Balanchine presented his own version to the world in 1954 at the New York Ballet Theatre. By the end of the 1960s, The Nutcracker had become the ballet without which the year's great celebrations are unimaginable.
