Needs of a Traveller
A Traveler's Needs / Yeohaengjaui pilyo | Director Hong Sang-soo | Cast Isabelle Huppert, Kwon Hae-hyo, Yunhee Cho, Hye-young Lee, Ha Seong-guk | Runtime 90 min. | South Korea, 2024 | English, French, Korean, Lithuanian subtitles, translated by Lina Gilė | N-13
A wide-brimmed hat to shield her face from the sun, a refreshing stream to dip her tired feet in, a few sips of the local drink makoli and a corner of the park where she can sit down and, if necessary, take a nap - these are the small necessities of this traveller. The enigmatic middle-aged Frenchwoman seems to live only for the moment. We do not know how or why Iris ended up in South Korea, nor do we know what her future plans are. Iris herself does not seem to be bothered by these questions either. She is happy to earn a little money by teaching French in an unconventional way, chatting with random passers-by, or just sitting in an empty café and eating a bowl of Korean rice.
This deceptively simple film combines the unmistakable minimalist style of Korean director Hong Sang-soo (Our Days) and the acting talent of French cinema icon Isabelle Huppert, who wittily and sensitively reveals the banality of everyday life and the poetry that is born from it. The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear, the second Grand Jury Prize.
Someone steps into the light
Somebody Comes Into the Light | Directed by Wim Wenders | Starring Min Tanaka | Runtime 8 min. | Japan, 2023 | N-13
The talents of Japanese dancer and choreographer Min Tanaka and German director Wim Wenders meet in the short film Somebody Comes Into the Light. A dance performance of stunning beauty, a dialogue between the two creators, which uses light and shadows to sculpt a mature body - like the trunk of a centuries-old tree, proudly bearing the imprint of time. Minas Tanaka, who studied classical ballet and modern dance, has become known for his experimental solo performances, often using the naked body as a stage costume. Lithuanian audiences have already seen a few seconds of this dreamlike dance performance in Wim Wenders' Oscar-nominated film "Great Days".
These films are part of the GREAT SPINDANCE programme
Cannes Branches, Venice Lions, Berlin Bears, Locarno Leopards, BAFTAs, European Film Academy statuettes shine on the shelves of the directors' homes. And then there are the actors starring in their new films - Tilda Swinton, Michael Shannon, Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain, Peter Sarsgaard... Some of these actors have Oscars on their shelves alongside other awards... And no matter what the greats do - shine or stumble - we'd love to see what they've created and how they've reinvented themselves this time.
