The laureates of the Government Prize for Culture and Art String Quartet "Chordos" present a creative project of an exceptional experience - an immersive work "One More Billion Problems?" by composer Matas Drukteinis, combining audio and visual media, which is to be performed in the extraordinary acoustics of the Liepkalnis Water Storage Facility. invites you to travel through the history of modern man (Homo sapiens sapiens), from millennia BC to the near future, observing the changes in the Earth's population. By the end of 2022, the Earth's population will have surpassed 8 billion. Exploring the continuous growth of the human population, the composer gives voice to the historical, present and possible future processes influencing the trends, revealing the changing environment, the structure of societies, technological or other factors.
Also, the work draws attention to and highlights today's challenges, which are specifically linked to the very large human population: food and drinking water security, sustainable economic and social development, stability of ecosystems, among others. However, as the composer says, the artistic research revealed an unexpected perspective. According to one of the United Nations' most realistic predictions, by the end of this century, for the first time in history, the human population will begin to decline, posing a whole new set of challenges for societies.
