These decorative shields, known as limestones, were created by Rustem Skybin, a ceramicist with a deep interest in Crimean Tatar heritage and the decoration of warfare. They replicate ancient ornamental compositions he discovered on Tatar weapons and armour. There are no comprehensive studies on the traditional decoration of the Crimean Khanate's war material. On the basis of comparison, an attempt is made to "read" the ornaments and identify the work of Crimean masters. This culture has certain canons, which differ from one craft to another and are determined by technical features. However, medieval helmets have a technological connection with the decoration of coins of the 19th and 20th centuries, the ornaments of the artifacts of the Giraeus dynasty can be compared with the ornaments of the armour of Crimean warriors, etc. Rustem Skybin's works create a link between different eras. The ornaments of the 17th and 18th century warfare reflect the constancy of tradition, and the artist interprets the symbols in a way that focuses on the preservation and transmission of meanings, and on the respect for specific compositions.
