Two Orthodox churches - one story.
Guide RIMUTĖ's tour:
The icon of Our Lady of Surgis is the main one here, but not the only one that grants graces to those who ask for them. We will learn how to read the icons, whose abundance often surprises casual visitors to Orthodox churches. Not only is Church Slavonic not used anywhere except in church, it has never been spoken. We'll hear what it sounds like and what makes it special.
Traditionally, the number of houses of worship betrays the abundance of religious communities. But this did not apply to Kaunas. The first churches in imperially occupied Kaunas were Catholic churches. When Kaunas became the centre of the Gubernia, it was not acceptable to have Orthodox churches in Catholic churches alone. When the city became a fortress, life changed radically. However, the large number of Orthodox churches did not indicate that there was a large permanent Orthodox population or that the Orthodox community was strong or influential.
The Orthodox Church of the Resurrection of Christ and the Orthodox Church of the Epiphany in Kaunas. The Cathedral of the Resurrection and the Cathedral of the Resurrection of the Mother of God open their doors.
