Event description
The first exhibition in this series, Collectors: the Edvardas Mickevičius Collection of Decorative Plates, presents more than 230 exceptional plates from the collector's personal collection, which he has been amassing since 1985 - almost 39 years. From the more than 1000 plates collected during this period, the most interesting ones have been selected for the exhibition - handmade plates of various shapes, sizes and decorative techniques from different countries around the world. The exhibition presents a collection of decorative plates, mainly collected in Europe, but also including examples from Asia and America. The plates in the collection, whether personally acquired by the collector or received as gifts from friends and colleagues, reflect a wide range of cultural and artistic expressions. The plates on display are varied in their use and design: antique and contemporary, decorative, wall, cabinet, table, service, commemorative, author's and one-off. The techniques vary from porcelain and faience to stoneware, terracotta, metal, glass and wood. Each item is not only a material object for the collector, but also a significant testimony of life history and ideas, reflecting the spirit of a bygone era and lasting through the collector's passion and the cultural trace left behind. The A. and P. Galaunis House-Museum (2 Vydūno Avenue, Kaunas) will be open until 30 March.
