Event description
The exhibition has three main aspects: missing iron - the no longer existing iron objects of small architecture captured by photographers and painters; invisible iron - the iron militaristic, architectural, sculptural and public space objects that have survived in the landscape of Vilnius, but which rarely attract attention; and inspiring iron - the artistic connection between iron and Vilnius, as manifested in the works of contemporary artists. All of them are intertwined, forming a seamless field in which contemporary artworks look like historical artefacts, and iron objects and objects are not inferior to works of art. This artistic field includes contemporary iron sculpture, graphic prints from iron objects found in Vilnius, and painted balconies in Vilnius. And photographs of weathervanes, roofs and gates from historic Vilnius. And projects for the city that were never realised. Iron is no longer an auxiliary element, but the main element. Militaristic, defensive, sculptural, architectural histories are woven into a single narrative, in which the distant echo of that distant roar of the iron wolf can still be heard. The Museum of Applied Arts and Design (Arsenalo st. 3A, Vilnius) will be open until 16 March.
