Medieval religious thought is permeated with the concept of exile. In a spiritual sense, it is perceived as a painful consequence of original sin: the expulsion of man from Paradise. The idea of exile as separation is developed and given meaning by the concept of excommunication, which refers to the removal of a person from the religious Christian community. The religious meaning of the concept of exile, its emotional impact led to the frequent use of Latin in the monophonic chant of the Middle Ages, which served a very important purpose of communication in those times. Exile songs are characterized by a masterful composition, a combination of allegorical poetry and a unique melody, unfolding in the depth of the performer's voice.
In the program Cantabimus in tierra aliena, the music ensemble Magister Petrus actualizes various aspects of spiritual exile, which are interpreted in the Latin hymns of the Middle Ages.
