Christos Hatzis - Cantata "Wormwood (Chornobyl)"The threat of nuclear energy is a constant question that accompanies us in these troubled times. In the world and Lithuanian media, we hear the names of Astravo, Visaginas, Zaporizhia and other nuclear power plants being inflected. Many of us remember the Chernobyl disaster that took place thirty-six years ago and its dramatic consequences. To mark the 20th anniversary of the accident, Canadian-born Greek composer Christos Hatzis composed the magnificent cantata "Wormwood (Chornobyl)" dedicated to memory and warning. To remember the victims of the accident and to warn about the threat of nuclear energy that will never disappear. The idea for the cantata came to the composer after learning that in Ukrainian the word "chernobyl" means "wormwood" (Latin Artemisia absinthium) and after comparing this meaning with the apocalyptic book "Revelation to John" (this is the last book of the New Testament), which mentions wormwood as a means of will result in the extermination of a large part of humanity. Affected by this interface Ch. Hatzis has created an impressive cantata, the music of which varies from gospel to contemporary harmonies, and the text presents the apocalyptic prophecies of the "Revelation to John" and freely interprets them through the prism of the composer's vision.
