January 6th - Three Kings. In the Church's liturgical rite, this feast is known as the Epiphany, when the Three Wise Men, guided by the star of the Messiah, came to bow down and present gifts to the infant Jesus, born in Bethlehem. In old Lithuanian customs, this day marks the end of the great twelve-day festival of the sun's return, when the daylight hours are extended "by a cock's stride". It is the day on which the Christmas period ends.
The solemn theatrical procession of the Three Kings is another tradition in the Christmas capital and the final chord in the festive programme of events. It will start at 16.00 at the Dawn Gate. The three-metre-high figures of Kaspar, Merkel and Balthasar, the Kings, will travel with a large entourage through the streets of the Old Town of Vilnius to the Cathedral Square to bring gifts to the Nativity scene, wishing the city's inhabitants a prosperous year. Vilnius residents and guests are also invited to join the procession and follow the shining star.
After the three kings reach the Nativity scene in Cathedral Square, a festive concert will start at 16:30, with the ARTyn Choir performing Christmas carols.
Later, at 18.00, the Three Kings will traditionally visit the courtyard of the Teachers' House, where a four-decade-old event will take place - a celebration for the whole family, "Hail, Christmas Tree!" which invites you to say goodbye to the green trees. The main aim of the event is to help children and parents understand the importance of preserving nature.
Participants will be greeted by the animation team "Live Toys", and assisted by the small actors of the Vilnius Teachers' House theatre studio Bats and the children's theatre Teatriukas, who will present a musical interactive programme of cheerful songs and games.
All are welcome at the festival, those who will bring their own decorated trees and those who have decorated artificial trees in a nature-friendly way.
