The ensemble Il Giardino Armonico returns to the Vilnius Festival for the umpteenth time, having been active for almost 40 years, gaining worldwide recognition and critical acclaim, and having established itself among the most important ensembles of early music. Il Giardino Armonico's concert performances and productions of Baroque operas have attracted packed houses, and recordings on Teldec Classics and Decca have won numerous awards, including Grammy, Gramophone, Le Choc de l'année and Diapason d'Or. The ensemble has performed with soloists such as Cecilia Bartoli, Isabelle Faust, Giuliano Carmignola, Christophe Coin, Katia and Marielle Labèque, Avi Avitalis.
The ensemble's leader, conductor and flutist, G. Antonini, has a special way of playing and an enchanting charisma, and he conveys the feeling of the music with all his body. As an authority on the interpretation of early music, Antonini is invited by various ensembles and is the artistic director of the Cantans Festival in Wrocław. He has appeared with the Berlin Philharmonic, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Zurich Tonhalle, Salzburg Mozarteum, Leipzig Gewandhaus and London Symphony Orchestras, and he has staged operas at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Salzburg Festival, Zurich Opera House and elsewhere.
Violoncellist Giovanni Sollima has collaborated with some of the world's most renowned musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma, Riccardo Muti, Claudio Abbado, Martha Argerich and many others. As a composer, Giovanni Sollima can be classified as a post-minimalist, combining elements of jazz and rock in an original way, unafraid of aggressive cutting. Sollima's works have been presented at venues such as Teatro alla Scala and the New York Knitting Factory, and one concert was held at an altitude of 3.35 km in the Italian Alps, where Sollima played a cello made of ice. This evening, alongside works by masters of 17th and 18th century music, we will hear Sollima's opus Passa Calle XXI for two scalamajas, cello, strings and continuo.
