The exhibition Vilnius Art in Museums. 1939-1944" invites visitors to get acquainted with the latest art history research related to the processes of formation of the national art heritage during World War II. The exhibition focuses on the two largest state art collections in Vilnius and Kaunas. The works and documentary material on display reveal the heritage conservation strategies used by Lithuanian museum professionals during the Soviet and Nazi occupations. The exhibition also extends the contexts of the NDG's main exhibition Vilnius, Wilno, Vilne 1918-1948 in order to broaden the knowledge of the integration of inter-war Vilnius artworks into the Lithuanian national art collections during the war. Some of these works are presented in this exhibition for the first time after more than eighty years in the darkness of the vaults.
