The Signatories' House of the Lithuanian National Museum presents a unique authentic document - the Declaration of the Council of the Lithuanian Freedom Struggle Movement of February 16, 1949 - one of the founding documents of the modern state of Lithuania. The text of the Declaration was drafted by Alfonsas Vabalas, a diplomat, who in 1939 defended his thesis in law at the Sorbonne University in Paris, and who was actively involved in the armed struggle after the Soviet Union occupied Lithuania. Its editors are eight partisan commanders who represented all Lithuanian partisan units and formed the Lithuanian Freedom Struggle Movement: Jonas Žemaitis-Vytautas, Aleksandras Grybinas-Faustas, Vytautas Gužas-Kardas, Juozas Šibaila-Merainis, Bronius Liesis-Naktis, Leonardas Grigonis-Užpalis, Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas, Petras Bartkus-Žadgaila. Today, in the context of the Freedom War-fighting Ukraine-NATO Summit, the Declaration of 16 February 1949 acquires not only national, but also geopolitical and international significance. The Declaration, signed by eight signatories, appeals to the Western powers for support in the struggle for freedom and sets out a vision for an independent Lithuania, highlighting the nation's fundamental aspirations, its desire to become part of the political integration structures of the West, its determination to resist occupation, its condemnation of the crimes against humanity committed by fascism and communism, and its commitment to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
