Event description
For the first time, the museum is exhibiting the book of resolutions of the Kretinga County Kretinga City Mayor of Palanga from 1936-1940, which helps to reveal the wider context of the life of Palanga resort in the 1940s. Palanga, which began to develop in the mid-19th century as a private summer resort for aristocratic families of the Tiškevičius counts, sought to develop as a modern western resort in interwar Lithuania, providing recreation and entertainment services to wealthy holidaymakers from Lithuania and other countries. With the adoption of the Law on Resorts in 1932, Lithuania's resorts began to operate de jure: they were granted the status of a resort, the pillow tax was introduced, and hygiene and quality requirements were set. Although the state gave priority to health services in resorts, Palanga was granted the status of a recreational resort to meet the recreational needs of the modernising society. At that time, there were two main resorts in Lithuania: Birštonas, a health resort, and Palanga, an entertainment resort. However, Palanga did not limit itself to entertainment culture, but also focused on preventive medicine. In 1932, Palanga was granted the status of a secondary town, with the separation of the municipality and the town, and at the end of the year the first elections to the town council were held. Jonas Šliūpas, who took part in the elections, was elected the first burgomaster of Palanga by the council in 1933. The Jonas Šliūpas Museum (Vytauto g. 23A, Palanga) will be open until 3 March 2024.
