S. Žvirgždas' work is influenced by historical photography. According to art historians, Žvirgždas' landscapes echo the international style of Pictorialism (a style of photography that imitates painting, especially popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries). His works depict an idealised nature without signs of civilisation, while his landscapes, with their distinct planes and highlighted details, resemble graphic drawings. After studying at Vilnius State University and the Institute of Folk Art in Moscow, S. Žvirgždas settled in Vilnius in 1981. In 1992 he was awarded the honorary title of Honoured Artist of Photography (EFIAP) for his works, and in 2004 he became a laureate of the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Art. His works are preserved in Lithuanian and foreign museums and private collections. Žvirgždas' works are also in the collections of the Šiauliai Dawn Museum. Some of his works can be seen in this exhibition, which reveals the artist's favourite genre - landscape. This genre has become the most important for S. Žvirgždas' work, which he has nurtured for more than four decades.
