Basia Rubin CD. Jewish Songs by B. Rubin is presented by Ekaterina Somicheva (soprano, Germany) and Ekaterina Porizko (piano, Germany).
Basia Rubin (1898-1985) is a composer of almost unknown Jewish origin.
Her family - her parents, seven sisters and a brother - lived in the town of Dolginovo, then part of the Russian Empire (now Belarus). Basia was a dentist, but in her spare time she devoted herself to music. She wrote over 200 compositions, mostly vocal lyrics. Many of her songs are based on her own Yiddish lyrics. Rubin's compositions include a lot of music for children and even a children's opera.
In June 1941, Dolginov was bombed, leaving only the four sisters of the large family of Basia. Basia's life was saved by music - she was on a trip to Minsk to present her works, so she survived. She never returned to her homeland. She died in Vileika, Belarus.
Several of the songs on the CD show the longing of the members of Basia's family who died.
