Tokyo, end of World War II in the Pacific Ocean. Eleven-year-old Mahito loses his mother in a fire and moves with his dad to his mother's hometown. They settle in a large, old house. On the grounds of the house there is a mysterious tower where a grey heron takes up residence. Mahito has complicated feelings with his dad, who runs a factory in the war industry, and his stepmother Natsuko, the younger sister of the boy's mother. Problems at school add to the troubles. Mahito learns that the tower was built by his great-grandmother's brother, who has mysteriously disappeared in the end. One day, when Natsuko suddenly disappears, Mahito goes up the tower to look for her. Accompanied by a grey heron, he unknowingly embarks on a long journey into an unknown world. Mahito finds himself in a strange realm where the living and the dead live together. As he meets the strange inhabitants of this kingdom, the boy uncovers the secrets of the world.
