The idea to establish a Baroque orchestra at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre was conceived when Sesto Quatrini became the artistic director of the theatre's opera. In cooperation with the Palace Museum, a collective was formed, bringing together performers from the theatre's symphony orchestra who are interested in Baroque music and the traditions of early music performance, and who have previously performed as members of various chamber ensembles or soloists. The creative partnership between the LNOBT and the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania Museum is not accidental and has a clear historical basis. The first operas (dramma per musica) in Lithuania were staged in the residence of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in the 1930s and 1950s, earlier than in metropolises such as Paris or London. Although the scores have not survived, they are believed to have been written by Marco Scacchi, a famous Italian composer and the bandleader of the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Vladislaus Vasa. Cappella Concertante Vilnense debuted in the spring of 2022 at a concert of the festival named after him, organised by the Palace Museum. The name of the orchestra is Cappella Concertante Vilnense. The word cappella is often used to describe music ensembles belonging to a specific place, while concertante emphasises that each member of the ensemble can also perform as a soloist, which is particularly important in Baroque music, and vilnense is the name of our capital city, which is a name that is combined with an ancient style.
