After a turbulent decade, Lino (Valentin Novopolsky) is finally getting his life back on track. After taking part in a healing twelve-step programme, Linas is now on his ninth step - to take responsibility for the wrongs he has done and to apologise to the people he has hurt in the past.
The main people on this list are his own family: after having his daughter when he was still very young, Linas couldn't cope with the stresses of his new reality and left his family behind. Now he is forced to take care of his daughter Ieva (Gerda Čiūraitė), who is now 17. After moving in together, the estranged father and daughter slowly try to get closer again, but it is not so easy. The situation changes when Maja (Angelina Daukaitė), a friend of Ieva's who is running away from problems in her family, starts to visit their home. Her liveliness and playfulness distract Lina and make it easier for her to survive Eve's hostility.
While Maja is completely devoted to her best friend, she soon develops a sympathy for Eve's dad that goes beyond friendship. As you know, you can't command your heart and Maja increasingly tries to stay alone with Lino. The latter, fully aware of the possible consequences, tries to keep his boundaries, but soon finds himself attracted to Maja.
Combined feelings, difficult questions and moral dilemmas - Ieva, Maja and Linas will have to find their own truths and the way forward, and they will have to learn how to understand, sympathise and forgive. Irma Pužauskaitė's debut film "The Ninth Step" opens in Lithuanian cinemas on 6 October.
