This talented pianist is known to the more discerning music lovers for his varied musical interests and activities, and is often seen not only at academic concerts, but also at jazz and electronic music evenings.
Motiejus Bazaras was born in 1987 into a family of musicians. His first musical skills were formed at home, which were later developed at the choral singing school "Varpelis", J. Naujalis Music Gymnasium (teacher Rymantė Šerkšnytė), J. Gruodis Conservatoire (teacher Sonata Bielionytė), the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre with professors Zbigneva Ibelhaupt and Sergei Okrushko, and the Hamburg Higher School of Music with the legendary pianist professor Volker Banfield. In 2012-2017, the pianist studied at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre in the class of Prof. Petras Geniušas for a Doctor of Arts degree under the supervision of Dr. prof. Rūta Stanevičiūtė-Kelmickienė. The topic of the research work was "Application of non-academic music practices in piano training". Rūta Knetickelisteinische Routine for Teaching Music Performance in Music Education. Motiejus Bazaras defended his Doctor of Arts degree at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre.
Motiejus is also interested in chamber music. He has participated and won several international competitions, and has participated in festivals with ensembles of various ensembles. The piano duo of Motiejus and Mykolas Bazārs has been in existence since childhood. They have accumulated a large repertoire, which has been appreciated many times in competitions and festivals. The joint project C. Orff's oratorio "Carmina Burana" together with the Kaunas State Choir, soloists and percussion group. The latest work is the album "No Games", released in 2021, in which the duo recorded never-before-heard works by Lithuanian composers for this ensemble.
The pianist has a lot of experience playing with various orchestras. He has performed with the Kaunas, Lithuanian and Tallinn Chamber Orchestras, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, the Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra, the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, and the Plovdiv Symphony Orchestra (Bulgaria). In 2019, the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra and the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra performed composer Jonas Jurkūnas's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra "Robots and Petals" at the "Iš arti" festival; in 2020, the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra performed "Robots and Petals" at the "Iš arti" festival; and the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra performed "Robots and Petals" at the "Iš arti" festival in Riga, Lithuania. Vytautas Bacevičius' First Concerto for Piano and Orchestra Op. 12 "Lithuanian Themes" with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Modestas Pitrėnas.
Motiejus Bazaras' achievements in the field of piano music have been well recognised in more than 20 international competitions, the most significant of which are: the International Competition "Young Musician" in Tallinn in 1998. In 1998, the International Competition "Young Musician" in Tallinn (1st prize), the International Competition "Konzerteum" in Athens (2nd prize), the International Competition "Pro Piano Romania" in Bucharest (1st prize) in 1999, the International Competition "Berlingske Tidende" in Copenhagen in 2000. Dvarionas Piano Competition in Vilnius in 2002 (Grand Prix), International Competition "Olimpo Musicale" in Kaunas in 2005 (Grand Prix), International Competition of S. Čiurlionis Piano and Organ Competition in Vilnius in 2011 (Diploma), International J. Vitolis Piano Competition in Riga in 2013 (2nd prize), International M. K. Čiurlionis Piano and Organ Competition in Vilnius in 2015. (
Due to the pianist's demanding nature, excellent control of the instrument, excellent understanding of style and musical partners, the pianist is eagerly invited to play with ensembles of different musical orientations. His passion for jazz, rock and other styles of music encourages him to choose the path of a versatile artist-performer. He has participated in ten Kaunas Jazz festivals with various projects and bands.
Motiejus is open to new musical ideas, is interested in different specific styles, and devotes a great deal of his attention and energy to the dissemination and popularisation of Lithuanian academic music. The trio "#sotuskaunomuzikai", created together with his brothers Mykolas and Benedikt, embodies the declared musical values. The Bazar brothers are also members of Los Secretos de Pablo, the only salsa orchestra in the Baltic States.
