William Fong's international career began in 1984, When he won first prize, the gold medal and the Rosa Sabater Prize at the International Jaen Prize Piano Competition in Spain. Shortly afterwards, he made his debut with the Philharmonic Orchestra in concerts at the St. John's Cathedral. He also performed with the Philharmonic Orchestra at St. Johnʼs Church in Smith Square. Subsequently, he was successful in the Busoni, Cleveland, Iturbi and Scottish International Competitions.
Performances in New York, Moscow and St Petersburg (under the auspices of the Sviatoslav Richter Foundation), as well as in Europe, were critically acclaimed. Invited to China and supported by the Arts Council of England, William has given concerts and masterclasses in Shanghai. He has also performed in Australia at the invitation of the President of the Australian Piano Pedagogy Conference, and was a keynote speaker at the New Zealand Music Teachers' Institute conference in Auckland, as well as giving a recital and masterclasses.
William regularly gives recitals, masterclasses, teaches and lectures in the UK and abroad, and is a regular participant in top international piano summer schools.
As an ambitious musician, William has played with ensembles such as the Brodsky Quartet and the Guildhall Strings. He has also collaborated with singers Steve Davislim and James Rutherford, and recorded an exciting and little-known chamber music repertoire. His concerts have been broadcast on television and radio in Europe and the United States. William has performed in all the major venues in London and his concerts have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM and the BBC.
William is a distinguished teacher, and has been invited to give masterclasses and adjudicate at competitions in the UK and abroad. He is Professor at the Royal Academy of Music and Head of Keyboard at Purcell School for Young Musicians, one of Europe's leading specialist schools for talented young musicians. As a professor, he is a visiting professor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the artistic director of Piano Star, an educational project and festival for young pianists in Romania.
